How to start therapy? What are the first steps?
1
Consultation
The first step is to schedule a free 10 minute phone consultation where we can discuss goals that helps us understand a bit about you and what you are looking for as well as give you the opportunity to ask any questions.
2
Schedule
We work together to find the best time and clinician for you to meet and send over easy and quick forms to sign beforehand.
3
Meet
We meet at your scheduled time in a confidential, secure place (whether in office or online through the client portal) so that you can start your therapy journey. Generally, clients book weekly or bi-weekly based on their need.
Let’s work through your concerns together, focusing on your goals in lieu of the things weighing you down and causing you pain.
FAQs
What is psychotherapy?
Generally, it aims to help individuals understand themselves, resolve issues they are facing, and equip them with tools they can use to overcome challenges in the present and future.
Is there one approach to therapy?
No, however, it is important to know what type of therapist you would like to support you. Even thought all therapists have to meet the state’s requirements, they can range from holding a very directive approach (such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) to a very non directive approach (like Person Centered Therapy) with everything in between. For more specifics, read this blog.
How do I pay for sessions?
Insurance copays and full private pay amounts are due at the end of the day. Copay amounts vary based on your insurance plan, so we advise contacting your insurance provider to avoid any unexpected costs. We accept Aetna and Cigna for clients in Tennessee, and Aetna, Cigna, Optum, and UHC for those in Florida. Please note that using insurance requires a formal diagnosis, which becomes a permanent part of your medical record. You may want to consider the self-pay rates as an alternative.
What if I need to cancel?
No problem at all! We kindly request a 48-hour notice to prevent any late fees
Is therapy scary?
Therapy is the best thing we think people can do, and, though it takes courage and strength, we’ve seen huge improvements in people’s mood, relationships, and other areas like family dynamics and job satisfaction.
Why are we so passionate about therapy?
We are passionate about therapy because we know what it is like to feel like you have to be strong or perfect, that you have to hold it all together when you are really breaking down inside. We know what it is like to go through tragedy, have a hard time receiving help, and not have the tools to live life in a healthy way. We know what it is like to feel alone, lost, questioning your purpose, and feel like you keep repeating the cycles in your life that are tearing you down. Through therapy, we have seen clients get a chance to take a breath, share their story, and heal from pain without judgement or pressure. We love reminding clients “you don’t have to keep living this way” and help clients experience freedom while forging their own path.
Is therapy for only when you are in crisis?
Many times, problems or crises are what finally bring people into therapy, but we also believe the best therapy can be done when we are NOT in the midst of a crisis. Instead of focusing solely on de-escalation and calming strategies, we can use the therapeutic space to explore options for our lives and try new opportunities. We believe therapy can be valuable for any season or stage of life.
"It’s a scary thing trying to get help, but after my consultation that took a lot of that anxiety and fear out of the equation."
