How To Handle The Holidays: Mental Health Tips
"I want a holiday I want to show up to". I was told that recently and it made me think. How many times do we overextend ourselves during the holidays and not even consider what we want or need to enjoy the season?
Here are a few tips I wanted to share before the end of the year comes rolling in to consider:
1. Don't overschedule yourself and practice saying “NO”
The holiday season is a time for family, friends, and relaxation, but it can also be a time of unrealistic expectations, pressure from ourselves or others, and anxiety from operating at a constant hurried pace. If you're feeling overwhelmed, don't try to do too much. Stick to a reasonable schedule (taking into consideration how you would like the holidays to go) and say "no" if you need to.
2. Get enough sleep
This can be a busy time, which can lead to late nights and early mornings. Getting enough sleep is important for your mental health so aim for at least 8 hours of sleep each night and it will be easier to lean into the festive spirit.
3. Eat healthy foods
Holiday parties are often full of unhealthy foods like sweets and fatty dishes which can impact your gut and ultimately your mental health. Try to balance out the holiday treats with some healthy meals and snacks. (And be sure to give yourself compassion if you don’t stick to the "plan”.)
4. Exercise
Just because you're busy doesn't mean you have to skip your workout. Exercise is a great way to relieve stress and boost your mood so make time for a holiday walk or jog.
5. Take breaks
Being around family and holiday shopping can be fun, but it can also be overwhelming. If you're feeling stressed, take a break, step away, or do something else for a while. Create time for self care or just take some time to relax.
6. Connect with loved ones, but acknowledge your feelings
This is a great time to connect with loved ones, but it can also remind us of those that are no longer here (whether through distance or death). Quality time with family and friends AND taking time to embrace emotions that may arise can help reduce stress and boost your mood.
7. Practice mindfulness
Mindfulness is a great way to focus on the present. Try to be mindful of your surroundings, the people you're with, and the things you're doing. Take time to enjoy the little moments.
8. Seek professional help if needed
This time of the year can be tough for some people. If you're struggling with mental health issues, don't hesitate to seek professional help. There are many resources available to help you get through this holiday season in a healthy, joyous way.
